We would like for our patients to be informed in recognizing problems which may occur and to understand how to solve them until it is convenient to return to the office.
Loose band or bracket
Keep band or bracket clean. Call the office for recementation appointment. (Be sure to save any part which comes completely loose).
Loose wire
Try to replace the wire in the bracket or tube with tweezers. If this is not possible, clip the wire with fingernail clippers behind the last tooth to which it is securely fastened. Call for an appointment.
Sticker
Attempt to push sticker down with the end of a spoon. If this is not possible, cover with wax and call for an appointment.
Lost tie-wire or elastic tie
This is not a real “emergency” but should be expected. Warm salt water held in the mouth can reduce soreness.
Headgear does not fit
If the headgear is not worn regularly as prescribed, it will not fit properly and should be adjusted.
Accidents involving the teeth
An appointment should be scheduled in our office as soon as it is convenient. However, if teeth are knocked out, chipped or broken, your general dentist or oral surgeon should be contacted.
Know the parts of the braces and check them regularly! Be a good “Brace Watcher!”
BRACE WATCHER’S SURVIVAL KIT
Contents and their uses:
Wax Can be placed over any part of the braces which may be sticking or irritating until it is convenient for you to return to the office.
“Brace Watcher’s” diet Braces may be broken if patient is not cautious in the foods eaten. Broken braces prolong treatment time.
Disclosing tablets Used to check plaque accumulation.
Orthodontic toothbrush Specially designed with grooved bristles for brushing around braces.
Travel toothbrush Compact to carry with you for brushing after meals or snacks.
Brushing pamphlet Brushing with braces is more difficult. Follow instructions carefully!
Mouth mirror The mirror is used to help you check your braces.
Fluoride gel Have the prescription for fluoride filled and use after brushing every night throughout treatment.
